Sorenstam Pours It On at Michelob ULTRA Open;
Sets New Tournament Scoring Record En Route to First Win at Kingsmill
When the bank opens on Monday, the LPGA's all-time leading money winner will deposit another sizable check.
World No. 2 Annika Sorenstam stormed to her third win of the 2008 season and the 72nd of her career, running away from the field at the LPGA Tour's "fifth major" – the Michelob ULTRA Open at Kingsmill. The victory earned her a $330,000 share of the $2.2 million purse.
Sorenstam fired a final round 5-under par 66 on Sunday, securing a seven stroke margin over the rest of the tournament's talent-laden field. Her four-day total of -19 (265) establishes a new tournament scoring record, shattering the previous mark of -14 (270) by 2005 MUO champion Karrie Webb.
"It feels great; amazing, really," said Sorenstam. "I like this place (Kingsmill), love the course and have always wanted to play well here. I always felt like this was a big tournament on our schedule and the best players are always here. It's kind of our players' championship."
Sorenstam's win at Kingsmill marks another major step in her quest to recapture the world's No. 1 ranking, a distinction she surrendered to Lorena Ochoa following an injury-plagued 2007.
"I'm very proud of the way I played this week," Sorenstam said. "This is what I've been waiting for. This is what I've been wanting to do. I just hope I can continue this momentum."
Overshadowed by Sorenstam's virtuoso performance were the outstanding efforts turned in by a cadre of players who posted totals of -10 or better for the tournament.
Allison Fouch and Karen Stupples made Sunday's biggest gains, firing rounds of 64 and 66 on Sunday to grab a share of second place at -12 (272). Joining them in a four-way tie were Christina Kim and Jeong Jang, who posted final rounds of 69 and 70.
Katherine Hull, who finished alone in sixth place at -11 (273), also notched a 7-under 64 on Sunday. Hull's round was highlighted by a two on the Par 5 seventh hole; the 29th double eagle in the history of the LPGA Tour.
Rounding out the top scorers for the week were Sophie Gustafson and Candie Kung at -10 (274) and Stacy Prammanasudh, Maria Hjorth and Jee Young Lee at -9 (276).
World No. 1 Lorena Ochoa finished -7 and in a tie for 12th place. Defending champion Suzann Pettersen, who mounted a late charge up the leaderboard, finished at -6 and in a tie for 16th place.
