The 2008 Michelob ULTRA Open at Kingsmill featured a $2.2 million purse and showcased the world's best female professional golfers. The elite field included four past tournament champions: Grace Park, Cristie Kerr, Karrie Webb and Suzanne Pettersen. Michelle Wie and Sarah Turcotte, general editor for ESPN the Magazine, joined the field as sponsor exemptions. The amazing talent and fan-friendly attitude of the players contributed to the overall success of this year’s tournament. Despite cooler, windy conditions and a few rain showers during tournament play, the River Course served as a beautiful venue for an exciting week of competitive golf at Kingsmill.
Annika Sorenstam found her spot on the leaderboard and maintained it through all four rounds. The Swede trailed by one-stroke after the first round but extended it to a three-stroke lead following the second and third rounds. Sorenstam proceeded to set a course record 19-under-par, carding a final round 66, finishing seven-strokes ahead of a four-way tie for second. Allison Fouch, Karen Stupples, Christina Kim and Jeong Jang shared the second place finishing with a 12-under-par 272. "Winning this tournament is just a wonderful feeling," Sorenstam said after accepting her trophy. "I think I feel just relieved, I feel at peace with myself knowing I can playthis golf course." The week following her win, Annika Sorenstam announced that she planned to retire following the 2008 season.
